Been planning this route for a couple years now. I think I've finally got it worked out. The main attraction is the Alpine Loop, but to make the drive worthwhile from the PNW, I needed to add a few more destinations from my bucket list. The attached screenshot from Gaia is fairly self-explanatory. A good portion of the route follows the Colorado BDR north to south. It then detours south to include a small section of the Rio Grande and over Stony Pass into the Silverton area. Next up is the Alpine Loop, which may take a couple days to explore as there's lots to see here. I'll be pulling an off-road teardrop behind a 07 4Runner SEV8, so I'll need a base camp for a couple nights to avoid pulling a trailer through the loop. Heading north through Ouray and Montrose gives me the opportunity to explore the Black Canyon of the Gunnison before heading west along the Rimrocker into Moab. I won't spend much time in Moab, but there are a few trails I'm interested in driving. Sightseeing, not technical stuff. From there I'll spend a night or two on the north half of the San Rafael Swell before heading west for the tour up Skyline Drive. I think I can do it in a month, but from the PNW it's a thousand miles to the start and another thousand to get home. I'm anticipating fall colors and cold nights, especially at the high elevations, and they'll be lots of that!

I haven't decided whether I want to do this solo or take on a couple companions. If you're interested (and this is probably a full month commitment) drop a note here and we'll see what transpires.

That sounds like a blast! I have been to a lot on your list and would love to return, however my whole year is booked! Safe travels...

Hey Trudog, thanks for the interest! I'm a bit late to the game because this entire trip will be new territory for me. I'll have to take it slow and not push too hard since I'll be 75 when I do this trip. Hopefully there will be a few more before I check out. 🤪 When on the trail I much prefer the Bronco, but I have to be realistic about doing a 3K mile trip without cruise control and A/C. 😝

I've been looking at going out that direction again. I took my kids there last summer, but I think we rushed the trip. I have some repairs and upgrades I need to make to my trailer, but I would like to do it again.

I agree that the Alpine Loop is not the place I want to rush the trip, so I'm anticipating a few extra days there. The first photo looks like the mill ruins at Eureka. I hope you didn't have the trailer at Engineer Pass. I was advised by several people who live in the area and are familiar with the loop, not to take a trailer, and I'm going to heed the warnings!

I did take the trailer to Engineer Pass. It wasn't horrible except for the couple of times we had to back up for oncoming traffic. I was told not to take a trailer out of Telluride, but I don't remember where I was trying to go. The trailer did fine for the most part. I just need to beef up the frame more.

I would 100 percent attend. Based in Provo Utah. It's a done deal. Please dont let me miss the sign up.

Hi there Shooter!
Is that 100% certain you can attend and 100% of the route as planned? No need to concern yourself with missing the sign up, there won't be one. This is a personal trip, not an OTG sponsored event.

I'm out in Kentucky, but I wouldn't mind jumping on your trip. I'm currently upgrading my truck and I still have some mods to do on my trailer, but your planned route looks like a winner. Please keep in the loop.

The Colorado BDR is a significant aspect of this trip, and for me remains unknown. But the fact remains that these routes were curated for motorcycles, not full size trucks. Last year I ran a good portion of the Idaho BDR and I was eternally grateful for the small size of my little 69 bronco. There was a considerable amount of oncoming traffic on super narrow shelf roads with the kind of exposure that gets you nervous. And I had the trailer with me. To be honest, I'm not thrilled about having to take my 4Runner. It's too big, and it doesn't have a solid front axle so it lacks durability. Even Ben (our illustrious leader for this site) is partially retiring his full size Ram 3500 for a smaller, lighter, and more nimble SUV. I appreciate your interest in this trip, and I'll give it some thought, but I'm reluctant to allow a full size truck to join.

Ok. It's a long way off. We can finalize the plans when we get closer to departure. I'm interested to know how much of this route you have already driven. Would you like the GPX file so you can examine the route in greater detail?

Don - As much as I would have liked to travel with you, I didn't realize you were pulling a big heavy fully appointed camping trailer. I'm afraid this doesn't meet my profile for a traveling companion. It's too restrictive, and where you can't go, I can't go. While I'm doing a basic route that would have accommodated a rig of your size and weight, there are too many off the beaten path destinations that I plan to visit. I'm pulling a go-anywhere trailer, you're not. I apologize for any disappointment I may have caused. Safe travels.

That's unfortunate. I'll have to plan something out there in the coming months. Maybe CA

I apologize for your disappointment, but here's the good news. I traced my route on TrailsOffroad which is an awesome tool for up to date trail assessment, and I believe the route t that I created is completely doable with your truck and trailer. Hagerman Pass is the only place you may face some difficulty, however, if you're traveling from north to south on the BDR you'll be going down this obstacle instead of up. The Colorado BDR GPX file is free to download from RideBDR.com and the Rimrocker Trail is also free to download. Do take note that the western end of the Rimrocker is very narrow and rocky with severe pinstriping. I chose to omit that section of the trail and use the highway into Moab. The Alpine Loop you are familiar with. The north end of the San Rafael Swell is self-explanatory if viewed on an app such as Gaia. TrailsOffroad has a point to point description of Skyline Drive, and it looks like it would be a fabulous tour through the high country.

I need to choose my companion carefully, because I intend to explore difficult destinations that are not on the main route. I hope you understand. Safe travels.
