Welcome to the forum!Hello All
I am located in Carson California with most of my camping in California and Arizona at established campsites. About 3 years ago I took a 4,000-mile trip from Carson, CA to Edmonton Alberta Canada staying at campsites in the Canadian Rockies. My rig is a 1997 Chevy Suburban K1500 4X4, pulling a trailer that I built from scratch with 35gal of water, solar panels with 1 200Ah lithium battery and 200-watt invertor. Refrigerator and freezer, hot and cold water, Blackstone Grill and Coleman stove.
I am interested in going off-road for remote campsites. My rig is not built for rock climbing and I am not really interested in doing any. My interest is to travel to remote areas and enjoy nature. My biggest issue is if my Michelin tires can perform when aired down for the dirt roads.
Hoping to take a trip with OTG in the near future.
Thank you for the reply. Yes I did all the work myself, purchased the truck new. 430K miles on it, safe to say I have replaced everything myself so I know the truck. I am looking at All Terrain tires now. Trying to decide on BF Goodrich K02 and Falken Peak Wild Peak All Terrain. Next would be limited diff for rear 3rd member. Try going out with this combination a few times before bringing the trailer. ThanksWelcome to the forum!
Your '97 Suburban is awesome. It looks restored, I'll bet you did that too. If you start using your Suburban for off-road trips (especially the kind of routes you find on OTG), it's going to take its toll. Ask me how I know. You'll have to decide how much you're willing to sacrifice on that front.
I think I'd be safe in saying that practically every route you'll find on OTG has its difficult section you need to get thru. Even well used forest service roads have their obstacles. Rocks, washouts, trees across the road, off-camber sections, etc. These are the roads that get you to the "remote areas" you are seeking. A good A/T tire is a prerequisite, including the spare. Your vehicle's ground clearance will always limit where you can go.
Welcome!Hello everyone. I'm Dave, along with my wife Cathy and our two old dogs, Storm (15) and Astro (13), we like to get to ghost towns and historical sites around the West from our home base at Lake Tahoe. We actually just did the Lost Coast Trail this past week using the nicely curated trail guide here. Had Usal Beach practically to ourselves, but met a nice couple (Hi Jim and Amy) who are also members here from Canada in their Bean teardrop. Our rig may be a bit over the top, but creature comforts are a requirement to keep the wife and dogs happy. Glamour shot from the south end of Saddle Mountain Rd (which just got some nice maintenance):
