OTG will be leading 4 day, 3 night wilderness exploration of Northern California's remote and Coastal Mountains in far northern CA and Southern OR. We'll camp at pristine and primitive locations, explore the clear emerald weaters of the Smith River, and hike and drive through ancient Redwood forests.

We Provide
An unforgettable overlanding experience in Northern CA / Southern OR, that entails expert guidance and knowledge about the places visited along the route.

Your Preparedness List (things you should bring)
  • Good vibes / a positive attitude --> we have a strict no A-hole policy!
  • Come prepared to pack out all of your trash/waste.
  • A full gas tank upon arriving at the meetup location
  • Enough food to last you the duration of the trip
  • Sturdy shoes or hiking boots
  • Appropriate clothing -- daytime temps can range from 50s along the coast to 90s inland, and lows will likely be in the 30s-50s.
  • Sunscreen + bug spray
  • At least 1.5 gallons of water per person per day
  • $30 cash including small bills (in case we do stay at any National Forest Campgrounds)
  • Firewood
  • Camping equipment
  • Flashlight
  • Communications device for Ham (handheld radios from Beofeng can be purchased on Amazon for around $25)

We've obtained a special use permit for the McGrew trail on June 11. @DPurdy85 (Daniel) will be leading a group on the McGrew on Friday morning, which is a few miles from our camp on night 1. This is optional for people that want to spend 2-3 hours wheeling a moderately technical jeep trail. There are numerous go rounds, so even if you don't have a modified 4x4 you can likely experience the trail and take the easier go-arounds.

For those of you that like or are interested in more technical trails, we've submitted a special use permit for the McGrew 4x4 Trail. This will be optional, but Daniel @DPurdy85 will most likely lead a small group to the trail from camp on Friday AM (assuming we get approved).

For those that want to get a bit rowdy, you'll have the option to go out with Daniel on Friday AM.

Some of the places we'll visit on day 1...

Hey @Mutt Wagon , yes, the trip is fully booked at the moment. I'll add you to the waiting list-- there is one person in front of you on the WL, but we typically end up with a few people bailing in the weeks before these trips.

Hey there, it's Steve Hegedus ! I'm confirming my attendance and super stoked to get out on trail with the group! Any recommendations for where to spend the night in the Cresent City area before we meet up on the morning of the 10th?

Quick question...The route overview notes 246 miles and looks like there's just the one gas station in Hiouchi. For this trip, will we do that many miles or....?I assume it's a good idea to bring jerry cans/RotoPAXs for this outing.

Hey @Steve H Check out the link to the google map posted in the original thread (also posted in my reply). We won't be doing the entire route given time constraints, instead we'll be doing a shortened version that's about 170 miles in length. I expect this should be well within the rnage for most vehicles in terms of fuel range, but if anyone is feeling range anxiety mid-way through the trip, they can make the run over to Hiouchi (just be prepared to pay a premium for fuel over there).

Hey everyone,

Small note from my end. Michel aka @Lexa_Overland will be leading the group from Sea Quake Brewery up to Sourdough Camp (our intended camp). Michel drives a white 80 series Land Cruiser with an Eezi Awn rooftop tent. You can't miss him-- he's the French guy ;) I have to pick my kid up on his last day of kindergarten and then will be heading north-- so I'll be joining everyone at camp on Thursday. If for whatever reason we can't get Sourdough camp, plan is to hit the North Fork Campground. Thanks again @Lexa_Overland !!!

No problem Ben, No more EEZI AWN tent on top but the rig is the same. I will be driving up from the Bay Area on Wed afternoon and will stop somewhere along the way, probably one of the campground in Avenue of the Giants.
