Example of a Trail Update for a Route

Date:
4/25/2021

Current Status: Open with some issues

Additional Details: Recent rains have caused the river levels to rise substantially. Buffalo River is approximately 3' deep. Lifted vehicles with larger tires (33" +) may find it difficult and/or dangerous to cross Buffalo River. There's another crossing that's about 30" deep 1/2 mile north of the main crossing. We recommend checking water levels first, but this is typically the alternative crossing point. Aside from water levels, the rest of the trail is running fantastic!

Additional Details: While much of the Cascadia Skyline is closed due to fire damages, I did travel on a lot of the northern section. Groomed roads are pretty well washboarded right now. We also just got the second round of early season snow! Expect snow from Wamic Road (south end) to Brooks Meadow (north end)

(sorry I failed on snow pics today)

Portions of this route remain closed following the fires in Oregon in 2020. The beginning of the route around Detroit remains closed (see link and closure map below) according to Willamette National Forest.

Many roads in Mt Hood National forest remain closed as well. Please visit the Mt Hood Alerts & Notices Road Table for the latest updates.

Hi Ben, Jimlobo (new member) here. Is there a way to find out the current conditions of the Cascadia Skyline trail? I would like do drive the trail in late August/early Sept. Is there deep river water I'd encounter, or significant road erosion? Thanks,

I just did a short stint of the northern part. One of the access points was closed so I entered at Bennett Pass on forest road 3550. The road was very rough and you need some clearance and 4x4. No difference in road condition even when I got to the “official” route.

I did it in my van and would not recommend it - unless you are sadistic and really like off-roading over rocks. A jeep or shorter wheelbase/height would be able to do it much easier. Had to cut two trees down to get through (height issues - just missed getting under the large tree by inches even with tilting the van) On the larger tree called the forest service and all they said was “why the hell are you on that road, it is in really bad shape” 😀777CED5A-E995-4C22-9A0A-34B1A21DF142.jpegD81844CC-D3FA-4B26-A3F8-F3EAB34E061D.jpeg

And those trees luckily were on the easy road (no rocks, inclines, or trying to maintain proper camber balancing over the ruts)

Thanks for the information and update on the Cascadia /Oregon trail. I appreciate that. Were you using a handsaw or chainsaw to deal with the trees? BTW have you done any of the Cascadia /Washington route?

Silky saw. Best hand saws around. Took about an hour to do the two cuts and move the large tree (amazed I could cut it with such a small saw).

I’ve done the stampede pass route a year ago and had no issues. Might do a small portion near st Helen’s of the new Washington route later today/tomorrow heading towards windy ridge view point
