This was my 3rd visit to Carizo Plain but the the first visit where the Bloom Delivered. We visited on Apr 20th 2023. The previous visits I scoped out the camping prospects. There are 2 official campsites: Selby and KCL Campground. There is dispersed camping off of Elkhorn Road. At this time of the year most of the roads were dry and dusty. Off the beaten track there were some roads that still had deep muddy ruts, I suspect that mud will be gone in a few weeks.
The main road are easily traversed in any kind of a passenger vehicle. If you head into the hills off of the main plain you may need 4WD to scale some of the steeper sandier sections.
In our experience the main flower bloom was on the eastern side of the park. For the best experience explore the side roads off of Elkhorn Road. Head into the hills! It truly is a sight to behold.
Be sure to get gas before you head onto the Plain and be sure to bring plenty of water and snacks.
