So I am trying to get the most bang for my buck and have my gear be as versatile as possible. Do you suggest a Garmin GPS watch as a overlanding GPS?

it’ll work. If I had only one gps, I would do the Garmin Inreach. (sp?) The peace of mind here is the satellite comm ability. It’s a subscription service for the comms, but there’s an SOS beacon (subscription needed for this to work as well) for emergencies. I often hunt with a couple septuagenarians, and I’m closer to 50 than 40 which means issues, especially medical are more likely.
other than that, smart phones and a Gaia subscription work great as well.
