I've downloaded a few routes and uploaded them onto Gaia GPS, but all of the points of interest symbols show as the generic waypoint symbol. How do I get them to show the correct symbol (e.g., gas station, camping, etc.)?

Hi @fwehrenberg

For about the last year or so, we've been incorporating Gaia's native tag info into our GPX files so that when you load a GPX file into Gaia, you should see Gaia's native mapping icons. However, there is a sizable minority of GPX files that predated this, so that's most likely why you see the generic red pins. We are in the process of going through all of our route guides and making the following updates:

  • Update Route Guide so they all follow the same basic design template
  • Incorporating Gaia GPS mapping icons into all GPX files
  • Converting all gpx files to tracks (not routes) so they're compatible with Garmin and other apps/devices
  • Adding detailed information to most discovery points and POIs within the details section of a pin/POI

If you let me know which routes you're seeing this for, I can verify if their on our to-do list to update.

Will you be updating the Cariboo-Chilcotin Backcountry Trail POIs? Right now they are the generic red pins...

Given that it’s mid-November, we’re currently prioritizing winter-friendly desert routes. Once we get through those, we’ll begin converting the remaining routes. We prioritize GPX updates based on route guide page visits and historical downloads.

This is easy, and not something you need to wait for someone else to do for you. You will need to edit each waypoint, choose the appropriate icon, then save it. The GPX files you get here are not locked to prevent changes.

Building on joeray's note: when you choose a generic symbol on the map, a box opens in the app (online and on tablet or mobile.) One of the selections inside that box is "edit". You can select a new symbol, and enter a new waypoint symbol and notes which will help you identify the waypoint. Then hit save and you are all done.

There are many great video channels on YouTube; search "gaia gps"

Hope this helps.
