The Saguaro Traverse is

Route/GPX: Saguaro Traverse Download Page (Requires subscription)
Meeting Location: 9am, Safeway Parking Lot 1551 W. St Marys Road, Tucson
Make sure your arrived fueled up and fully stocked with water, food, and supplies.
Fees: We'll be visiting Saguaro NP so you'll need a park pass or to pay the entrance fee. We may also stay at a developed campground on our last night. Bring at least $20 w/ small denomination bills.

Event Ends: head home the morning of Mar 18 (unless you're joining me for the Sky Islands adventure!)

Firewood:
Please bring firewood if you can.

Vehicle Requirements:
  • 4x4 with 4-low gearing (no AWD vehicles)
  • Aftermarket off road tires (AT, MT, RT) and a full size spare
  • Aftermarket lift recommended, but not required
Recommended Gear: Days can be cool to warm. Night time temps can vary dramatically from mild to 30s-40s. And don't forget the sunscreen. Dress accordingly!


Day 1

Camp: Silverbell Group Site or Park Links Road

Places we'll see/visit:
  • Red Hills Visitor Center @ Saguaro NP
  • Hohokam Road Loop (Saguaro NP)
  • Hike to Signal Hill Rock Art (5 min hike)
  • Drive thru Ironwood Forest Nat. Monument
  • Visit Titan II Missile Base

Day 2
Mileage:
80-90
Camp: Shire District dispersed camping

Places we'll see/visit:
  • Sasco ghost town
  • Abandoned cattle ranch / 96 Ranch ruins

Day 3
Mileage:
80-90
Refuel: Oracle
Camp: Reddington Pass Vicinity

Places we'll see/visit:
  • Drive Control Road (if open)
  • Visit Peppersauce cave (if control road open)
  • Drive to top of Mt Lemmon (if open)
  • Drive Reddington Pass Road


Day 4
Mileage:
25-90 (depends on where we camp)
Refuel: Oracle
Camp: Either head south towards Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge or developed campground on hwy 39 (road to Mt Lemmon)

Places we'll see/visit:
  • Continue driving Reddington Pass Road
  • Hike to Tanque Verde Falls (if there is water, 1.2 mi)
  • Cactus Forest Drive (Saguaro NP)
  • Javalina Rocks

Howdy! I’ll definitely be there for the Saguaro traverse. I’ll continue towards Sky Island if nothing unexpected will require me to return to work. Looking forward to meet you!

@Grey4R Please make sure you get a ticket for the Sky Islands event. We have limited space, so can't guarantee an open spot.

@MrChips I'll likely figure out the meeting location about a week before the trip. It'll likely be somewhere not far from Pima Community college on the westside of Tucscon.
