Walker Ridge and Bear Valley Rd April Wildflowers

Are easy dirt and gravel roads worthy of a report?

My wife and I drove the Walker Ridge and Bear Valley loop looking for flowers. Walker Ridge is mostly BLM land in chaparral and McNab Cypress forest that is a popular off-highway vehicle area and open for hunting. Bear Valley is protected range land and has a long ranching history. It boasts impressive wildflower displays. Walker Ridge and Bear Valley have a high diversity of endemic and rare plants. We found a few rare plants and some more common ones. As a bonus, we also saw a whipsnake and a gopher snake! No photos of the whipsnake. He was too fast. Lots of birds out and even saw a few frogs jump into Bear creek.

Did some of this route in the middle of last summer--- definitely much more scenic when the hills are green and the wildflowers are blooming! Thanks for sharing.
